Environmental Standards

Sharjah Airport is committed to preserving and protecting the environment, as well as keeping a low carbon footprint. Our aim is to reduce our impact on the environment and be an environmentally-friendly airport. We are achieving this by minimising pollution levels, being energy-efficient, reducing, reusing and recycling, and sharing our environmental data with business partners, stakeholders, concessionaries, other airports and the community.

Sharjah Airport operates its day-to-day business activities using a well-established environmental management system, which is certified ISO14001-2015. This includes the following ‘green initiatives:

Sharjah Airport has been awarded Airport Carbon Accreditation by the Airport Council International (ACI), which recognises airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their CO2 emissions. Initiated by ACI Europe in 2009, the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme was extended to Asia-Pacific in November 2011. The programme, which is the only independent standard for carbon management and emission reductions at airports, is slowly being implemented across airports worldwide.

Sharjah Airport has made a long-standing commitment to build a sustainable future. We operate and develop the airport in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, and we recognise that our success can be enhanced by conducting business in a way that is environmentally, socially and economically responsible.
We put sustainability into the heart of our operations by following a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle strategy. Initiatives include the strict monitoring of electricity and water consumption, and an integrated waste management system targeted at zero landfill waste.

Sharjah Airport is committed to improving the air quality both inside and outside the airport. We are fully aware of how indoor air pollution is a significant public health risk; to naturally improve the air quality within the terminal buildings and other built-up areas, we grow plenty of indoor plants and have installed healthy ventilation systems.

Sharjah Airport has made a commitment to ensure that its operations have minimum impact on the environment, and it is working towards a reduced carbon footprint and energy consumption. This is achieved through a formal carbon management plan, effective engagement with its stakeholders, and continuous monitoring of all activities.
